Problem Solving

I'm passing along this little rubric from Seth Godin because when I read it I knew that I needed to write it down on a note card and post it at my desk. My brain usually has one or two things bouncing around inside that could use a run through these questions: goals, problems, difficult people, or future scenarios.

I'm sure that I'll soon adopt it as my own and the next time I'm leading a group I'll throw it out as if I've invented it.

Which of the four are getting in the way?

You don't know what to do

You don't know how to do it

You don't have the authority or the resources to do it

You're afraid

Once you figure out what's getting in the way, it's far easier to find the answer (or decide to work on a different problem).

Stuck is a state of mind, and it's curable.

  1. This is helpful. I recently had a conversation with someone concerning their mental model for getting "unstuck". Their answer: be authentic. In other words, say exactly "what is so." In yet other words, say which of the four are getting in the way.

  3. I think that I have had situations in my own life where each have taken their turn in the spotlight.
